Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt worked during the night shift as nurse to ensure she could pursue her love of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay immediately became enthralled when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was in her college. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of the jury. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Besides PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
