Anita Ekberg

 

Kerstin Anita Marianne Ekberg (Swedish pronunciation (listen) 29 September 1931 - 11 January 2015) was an Swedish actress in American and European films, famous for her beauty and stunning appearance. Her performance as Sylvia in Federico Federlini's film La Dolce Vita (1960) was a hit and made her famous. Ekberg was born in Sweden on the 29th of September 1931. She was the sixth child of eight. Anita was a fashion model throughout her teenage years. Ekberg, at the urging by her mother, in 1950 was a contestant in Miss Malmo. This resulted in her winning the Miss Sweden contest. Despite speaking little English, Ekberg went to the United States to compete for the Miss Universe 1951 title. It was an official pageant in the year 1951. The pageant was made official in 1952. Ekberg was not the Miss Universe winner, but she was among six finalists. However, she did earn a contract with Universal Studios as a starlet. Ekberg was a Universal starlet where she learned the art of elocution, drama and dance. She was briefly featured in The Mississippi Gambler (1953), Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (1953) (playing an actress on Venus), Take Me to Town (1953), and The Golden Blade (1953).
